This is the call we receive most often. A cat climbs easily because its claws curve backwards and push it upward. Those same claws make it impossible to come down head first, and many cats never learned to reverse down a trunk.
The belief that a cat always comes down eventually is false. A frightened cat freezes, climbs higher at the slightest noise, and can stay up there for days without drinking.
What to do
- Note the time you saw it go up: that is the first question you will be asked.
- Move dogs, children and onlookers away from the base of the tree.
- Leave its usual food and a bowl of water at the foot of the tree, then step back and watch from a distance.
- Speak calmly, without shouting its name over and over.
- Take a photo from a distance showing the height and the branch it is on.
- If night is falling and it has not moved in twelve hours, call.
What to avoid
- Climbing the tree yourself or leaning a ladder against it: most serious injuries in these situations happen to people, not cats.
- Shaking the branch or spraying it with a hose: it will climb higher.
- Leaving a dog at the base of the tree hoping it will come down.
- Calling the fire department: they have neither the mandate nor the equipment for this.
- Waiting more than twenty-four hours, especially in cold or extreme heat.
How our intervention works
A rescuer trained in rope access sets up a system independent of the tree itself where possible, climbs slowly so the cat does not bolt, and secures it in a capture bag or soft carrier before descending. The operation takes thirty minutes to two hours depending on height, tree species and the cat's temperament.
Once on the ground the animal gets a quick check. If it is dehydrated or injured, it goes to a partner clinic or shelter.
Does a cat always come down from a tree on its own?
No. A cat's claws curve backwards: they help it climb but prevent it from descending head first. A frightened cat can stay up a tree for days without drinking. After twenty-four hours, or sooner in extreme cold or heat, it needs help.
